The Complete Asian Handicap Guide: Giving & Receiving Goals, and Reading "1+50" and "-0.5"
The Asian Handicap exists to make lopsided matches more bettable, with the stronger team "giving" the weaker team a goal margin. Understand it and you can find more valuable plays when a strong team is a near-lock but the odds are tiny.
In short: the favourite gives the underdog a goal head start. -1.5 means the favourite must win by 2+; +1.5 means the underdog covers unless they lose by 2+. The Taiwan notation "1+50" means a 1.5-goal handicap.
The Giving Side vs the Receiving Side
The favored stronger team is the "giving side" (a negative handicap, e.g. -1.5); the weaker team is the "receiving side" (a positive handicap, e.g. +1.5).
At settlement the handicap is added to the score: betting the giving side at -1.5 means the strong team must "win by 2 or more goals" for the bet to win; betting the receiving side at +1.5 means the weak team wins if it "loses by 1, draws, or wins."
Whole-Goal Handicaps Can Push (Stake Refunded)
With half-goal handicaps like 0.5, 1.5, or 2.5, there's only a win or a loss — clean and decisive.
But with whole-goal handicaps (1 or 2 goals) a push is possible: e.g. at a 1-goal handicap, if the strong team wins by exactly 1 goal, the bet is a push and the stake is refunded.
The "1+50" Notation Common in Taiwan
Some Taiwanese or Asian books write the handicap in a "whole number + decimal × 100" format:
- 1+50 = 1.50 = a 1.5-goal handicap
- 1+25 = 1.25 goals
- 0+50 = 0.5 goals
- 1+75 = 1.75 goals
Mapping It to Sporta.AI's Lines
Sporta.AI's line table uses the standard notation "home -1.5 / away +1.5," so "England 1+50" seen elsewhere equals our "home -1.5" — you can directly compare the model's win probability and expected value to judge whether it's worth it.
Key note: our model has more of an edge on the Asian Handicap (the goal-margin spread), which is why the site specifically highlights handicap picks.
FAQ
What's the difference between "-0.5" and "+0.5"?
A -0.5 handicap is equivalent to a no-push moneyline: the strong team wins the bet if it wins, and loses on a draw or loss. A +0.5 handicap means the weak team wins the bet on a draw or win, and only loses if it loses the match.
Which is better, the handicap or the moneyline (1X2)?
It depends. When a strong team is a near-lock but the moneyline odds are too low, the handicap can amplify value; but the handicap is also riskier (the team must win by enough goals). Sporta.AI uses expected value to help you judge which line is the better deal.
